Poem – Parting Gift (In memory of Lee Newhall)

Sean Lee

Parting Gift
(In memory of Lee Newhall)

When you wake
to find your world
changed overnight
when through the sting
of swollen eyes
you see the morning
has forgotten to bring the dawn
and nobody else
has noticed the lack of light
as though life is happening
elsewhere
you’re allowed to trick yourself
you’re allowed not to believe

but you are here
and life is still happening
you’re just hiding
from the mourning
you can’t face.

So when you’re ready
whisper their name.
It’s everything
that they were and in the light
you’ll know
they left it there
for you to speak.
